Polarization and Inequality : an International Comparison
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we analyze the trends in polarization in the US and other developed and transitional economies. Many studies have stressed the break in equalizing trends in income distributions in these countries. As polarization has emerged in the literature concerning the issue of income distribution, we here apply new contributions to the measurement of polarization proposed in Esteban, Ray and Gradín (1997) to describe their tendencies through time and across countries. Additionally, we investigate whether polarization was mainly due to increasing polarization between the groups or it was the result of their groups becoming internally more identified. This method allows us to analyze whether polarization between the groups has increased due to a larger income distance between the extreme groups or due to an increase in their sizes (shrinking the ámiddle class»). * I acknowledge the provision of data necessary for this paper by both LIS and University of Michigan.

A Study on Ethnic Conflict Potential with an Emphasis on Social Inequality: Case Study of Sistan and Balouchistan Province
This paper investigates the potential for ethnic conflict in Sistan and Balouchistan province with an emphasis on social inequality using document analysis method. Combination of three basic theories of ethnic conflict, namely "security theory", "opportunity theory" and the theory of "oppression" were used simultaneously. The findings show that Sistan and Baluchistan province suffers from mor...
متن کاملPolarization constant $mathcal{K}(n,X)=1$ for entire functions of exponential type
In this paper we will prove that if $L$ is a continuous symmetric n-linear form on a Hilbert space and $widehat{L}$ is the associated continuous n-homogeneous polynomial, then $||L||=||widehat{L}||$. For the proof we are using a classical generalized inequality due to S. Bernstein for entire functions of exponential type. Furthermore we study the case that if X is a Banach space then we have t...
متن کاملOpenness of Trade, Unemployment and Inequality of Income Distribution: Comparison between Developed and Developing Countries
In the discussions of trading, unemployment and income distribution inequality, this question is raised by economists that in economic development of developing and developed countries, which policy is necessary in the first stage. Is trading liberalization the pre-requirement of transfer from a close economy to a relative open economy and is it necessary for the developed economy compared to o...
متن کاملEPR Test with Photons and Kaons: Analogies
We present a unified formalism describing EPR test using spin 1/2 particles, photons and kaons. This facilitates the comparison between existing experiments using photons and kaons. It underlines the similarities between birefringence and polarization dependent losses that affects experiments using optical fibers and mixing and decay that are intrinsic to the kaons. We also discuss the limitati...
متن کاملPolarization and the Decline of the Middle Class: Canada and the US
Several recent studies have suggested that the distribution of income (earnings, jobs) is becoming more polarized. Much of the evidence presented in support of this view consists of demonstrating that the population share in an arbitrarily chosen middle income class has fallen. However, such evidence can be criticized as being range-specific – depending on the particular cutoffs selected. In th...
